Does Your Child Have Vitiligo?
It is important
for parents with children who have Vitiligo to prepare
their child mentally for the uncomfortable situations
they may have to face by curious and sometimes cruel
peers at school.
Most pre school
children with Vitiligo are not aware that they look
different in any way, but can have a rude awakening once
they start attending school and come into contact with
other people their age.
It is important
to prepare the child with well informed facts about
their condition, in a way which they can comprehend
easily. This will help them to answer those awkward
questions from peers.
It is also
important to pay attention to childrens emotional
needs too. A child with Vitiligo has the extra burden of
coping with the fact that they look different in
addition to the usual issues at school such as social
popularity and academic performance.
Encouraging the
child to occupy themselves with a constructive hobby or
recreational activity is not only a healthy thing for
their development, but may also help them to shift their
focus away from their condition.
Lastly, it is
important to provide the child with the necessary love
and support. This love and support is to be primarily
provided by the parents, and can be supplemented by
other adults in the childs life. This can include
grandparents, teachers and sports coaches.
In this respect, it is good practice for the parents to fully appraise these people about their childs condition.
