Factors That Can Effect Vitiligo
While the exact
reason Vitiligo occurs in the first place is not known,
there are several known reasons which can affect its
spread.
This article
outlines a brief list, and by no means intends to be a
comprehensive analysis of what may factors may further
spread Vitiligo.
1)
Sun exposure
2)
Emotional stress
3)
Undiagnosed immune issues
4)
Repeated trauma to same spot
Too much sun
exposure can make a case of Vitiligo worse, and can also
create new depigmented spots with repeated sun burns.
Simple measures such as sun block, tight natural fiber
clothing and wearing a hat can dramatically reduce the
risk of making your Vitiligo worse.
Emotional stress
can suppress the immune system. As Vitiligo has a well
established link with the immune system although
immune issues are not mooted as the only reason possibly
causing Vitiligo A period of emotional stress can
bring about a spurt in the spread of patches. This is
especially difficult as Vitiligo sufferers may already
be suffering from emotional issues arising from their
physical appearance.
A person
recently diagnosed with Vitiligo should ask their doctor
for further testing to eliminate the possibility of any
underlying immune issues such as Lupus (SLE) and thyroid
issues. It is not only important to seek treatment for
immune disorders, but this may also help to curb further
spread of Vitiligo.
In some cases,
repeated trauma to the same part of the skin may result
in Vitiligo. Although this is not common, but people who
work in environments where manual labor, use of tools
and corrosive chemicals etc are involved should take all
necessary precaution to limit injury to their skin.
As stated above, while this list is by no means comprehensive, but the author hopes that it will be useful in helping
Vitiligo sufferers prevent further spread of their patches.
